We design, manufacture and commercialize fully compostable, plant-based materials for everyday consumer products (currently single-serve beverage pods).
Our pods work in Keurig brewing systems.
Our pods use plant-based biodegradable materials that break down (toxic free) when composted.
Biodegradation is the breakdown of materials by microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. Composting occurs when humans create a specific environment for biodegradation to take place.
Absolutely! We work with established roasters to deliver a rich, bold cup of coffee that does not compromise on taste.
The pods can be disposed of in the green bin, where municipalities accept biodegradable packaging. The entire pod is biodegradable – no need to separate the lid, cup, or coffee.
NEXE pods should be handled by your municipal composting facility to ensure they break down completely. NEXE encourages backyard composting and will soon release information on how to build a true DIY compost.
Municipal composting facilities use higher temperatures to ensure that organic waste breaks down more quickly and completely than a backyard composting pile. In some facilities, the compost can even be used to generate renewable natural gas.
The NEXE pod was developed in collaboration with the Municipal Biofuels Facility in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, which processes more than 115,000 tonnes of organic waste per year. We have shown that our pods biodegrade using windrow composting, in-vessel composting, and anaerobic digestion.
Our pods will be available for sale beginning in 2021.
Our pod materials have been validated as fully biodegradable by researchers at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada and a soon to be completed certification from the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).
Our pods break down to natural and non-toxic materials. A six-month third-party study found that there was no impact on the growth of vegetables in soil with added NEXE pod compost.
Conventional coffee pods are made from non-biodegradable materials that remain in the landfill for 500* years or longer. Our pods can be composted in as little as 35 days.
Composting is the best solution to reduce the footprint of plastic use, given that less than 9% of plastic is recycled worldwide.
